For one day in the summer of 2021, we roamed through Chemnitz cemeteries, soaking up their atmosphere, looking for and finding angels, “mourners” and signs. The aesthetics of the figures left a lasting impression; we translated their gestures into our first movements (Link on ” In search of angels and signs”) the very next day.
The old section of the Jewish cemetery impressed us with its barren grave grounds – and with the graves that cannot be found there: All those who were murdered in the concentration camps, torture cellars, on transports and death marches were left only to, as Celan writes, “a grave in the air”. Despite all this, the fact that there is a Jewish community in Chemnitz and thus a new section in this cemetery gives hope.
