#chemnitz2025 | Microproject „Sprache der Engel | Gesten als Mittler zwischen den Kulturen“

Angels play an important mediating role as messengers in all religions. They are “media”, “mediators”. They are partly the message themselves, partly they deliver messages. In the religions, angels are presented and imagined in different ways, as embodiments, as immaterial beings, as voices, as bearers of scripture, as winged beings and as letters. Religious ideas have greatly influenced cultures – and even for many people who consider themselves non-religious, angelic figures have a place in their education, in their language and in their everyday imagination. In particular, the performing and visual arts, literature and music have also repeatedly taken up the theme of “angels” and worked on the topic of the “language of angels” and “transmission of messages”. The participatory art project “Language of Angels | Gestures as Mediators between Cultures” establishes connections between these worlds of imagination. In 2020/2021, the micro-project focuses on pictorial representations, photos of angel figures and other messenger figures whose gestures have a legible meaning, and on their translation into other forms of representation.
